Thinning Prescription Lenses

Can thicker, high powered prescription lenses be made thinner?

Yes, by using high index lenses. The thickness of lenses is determined by their refractive index, with high refractive index lenses being thinner. Higher prescriptions, typically above +/-2.00D, benefit from the use of higher refractive index lenses.

What are high refractive index lenses?

High refractive index lenses refer to the way a lens refracts light. Simply put, higher refractive index lenses allow for a higher prescription to be accommodated in a thinner piece of lens. Options include Standard (1.50 index), Thin (1.60 index), Super-Thin (1.67 index), Ultra-Thin (1.74) lenses.

Do I Need Thin Lenses?

The refractive index of the lenses we advise, depends on your prescription. Thin lenses (1.6 index) are advisable for prescriptions of +/- 2.00 D or above. Super-thin lenses (1.67) are recommended for prescriptions of +/- 4.00 D or above.  Ultra-thin lenses (1.74) are recommended for prescriptions of +/- 6.00 D or above.

Are Thin Lenses Better?

For high prescriptions (2.00D or above), thin lenses are beneficial. Their edges seamlessly fit the frames and are less visible, providing a lighter feel compared to standard lenses. They also help reduce the magnified appearance of the wear’s eyes.

How much Difference will Thin Lenses Make?

Our thin lenses, 1.60 are up to approximately 20% thinner than basic lenses, while super-thin lenses, 1.67 are up to 30% thinner and ultra-thin, 1.74 are up to 40% thinner. These options can offer a significant reduction in thickness for more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing eyewear for higher prescriptions.
